One year ago, I started this business after the rug was completely ripped out from under me. Just one month after Ben and I moved in together—blending our family of six kids and two dogs, moving to a new city, and starting over—I suddenly found myself without a job.
I knew I had the skills and the experience to build a business. But knowing that and actually taking the leap were two very different things.
Because if it failed… it was on me.
That felt incredibly heavy.
I can’t even count how many times I broke down in those first few months thinking, “What did I get myself into?”
Then, just a couple of months in, my health took a turn — symptoms that would lead to a Hashimoto’s disease diagnosis nearly five months later.
There were a lot of moments when it would have been easier to stop. It would have been easier to go get a job.
But I didn’t.
I kept showing up.
I kept learning.
I kept getting referrals.
I kept growing.
I kept expanding our services.
I’m not someone who loves attention or recognition. I’m usually the person quietly working behind the scenes.
But today…
I’m really proud of myself.
And none of this would have been possible without the incredible people who trusted me. Whether we worked together on one project, you’ve been a long-term client, or you’ve referred someone my way — thank you for trusting me with your business, your ideas, and your goals. It’s a privilege I never take for granted.
To say I couldn’t have done this without Ben is an understatement. He carried us while I got this business off the ground, made sure I had everything I needed to get started, and reminded me to keep going even on the days I was convinced I couldn’t. Ben — thank you for believing in me when I couldn’t believe in myself, and for giving me space to grow, not just as a business owner but as a person too.
Here’s to one year of building something that aligns with my values, serves incredible people, and reminds me that the hardest seasons can become the foundation for something better than you ever imagined.
One year. Clients in eight different states. A business built almost entirely on referrals. And we are just getting started. Happy Birthday, Run Your Life Company.
